Keep in mind that a patent is written in pencil. By that I mean that until it survives a challenge, it isn't really a secure thing. They are rescinded and modified on a regular basis. Quite often a trade secret is a better path for securing an intellectual property as you don't have to publicize the basis of what you have, however investors really like patents much better as they can see what you have and they feel that they are more secure (sometimes it is a false sense of security). It is really a very complicated area, which is why good intellectual property attorneys are so few and far between and why they command so much money.

As far as the specifics of AIMM's patents. I'm not familiar with them at all and doubt you'll get me to delve into it. Do your own DD.
