Joe: Fab 25 should be fine for Duron / Morgan up to 1.1 or 1.2 GHz, which takes it all the way to Q1 or Q2 2002.

We can easily agree on that. What worries me is that AMD hasn't come out and said anything about its plans for Fab25 post .18mu.

I hope they will convert it to HiP7, and reduce the number of different process technologies that AMD needs to support.

Fewer processes and fewer cores. That's the way AMD should go, imho. Next year, we could easily see:

- .18mu Cu
- .18mu Al
- .13mu SOI
- .13mu "regular"

- Sledgehammer
- Clawhammer
- Palomino
- Morgan
- Appaloosa
- Thoroughbred

4 concurrent processes and 6 cores... that's not exactly ideal, imho.

But I think AMD should start to build another fab, and possibly get into contract fab services.

I would really rather see AMD work very closely with one of the major server CPU producers (i.e. Alpha or Sun). I don't think "regular" foundry work is something that is easily combined with AMD's business model (and despite their production expertise, I don't see a lot of synergy).
