Anywhere where bid and ask share numbers can be hidden is perfect for "manipulation." Here's what happens, institutions call in large buy and sell orders to their brokers. Trading desks at other mm firms somehow get wind of these orders and then play them against us (and the institution itself). We have no idea till after the damage has been done cause all we ever see is 100 shares to buy or sell that never seems to get filled. Seems tremendously unfair, but that's the way it is nevertheless. MMs can also slow volume flow by sitting on the bid or ask and taking 100 shares at a time -- using the longest time limit allowable. That's how they are able to "walk a stock" up or down on minimal volume. FWIW, I personally feel the mm system should be completely abolished on liquid issues -- to be replaced by a purely Instinet/arca/isld type system with full disclosure. Unfortunately, it'll never happen cause the mms ARE the nasdaq and would never agree to give up their advantage over u and I.
