Chicony to include Iomega Zip drive in new high-end notebook computer
BusinessWire, Wednesday, June 04, 1997 at 12:36
COMPUTEX, TAIPEI, Taiwan--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 4, 1997--Iomega Corp. (NYSE:IOM) Wednesday announced that its internal notebook Zip drive will be included as an optional feature in the 97X series of notebook computers made by Chicony Electronics Co. Ltd. of Taipei. Iomega's notebook Zip drive is expected to be available to laptop computer makers in the second half of 1997. The MP 978 is expected to be the first model in the 97X notebook series to include a smart bay that accommodates Iomega's internal notebook Zip drive. With its extra-large screen and high-speed Pentium processor, the notebook will be targeted at power users and is planned to be available worldwide through Chicony's sales channels in the second half of 1997. "Notebook computer users, especially power users, increasingly need to work with large multimedia presentations and files," said David Hellier, managing director of Iomega Pacific. "By featuring the notebook Zip drive in its new high-end model, Chicony is addressing its customers' storage needs, while showing its commitment to enhancing its customers' capabilities." Designed as an internal Zip drive for original equipment manufacturers (OEM) to build into laptop computers, the notebook Zip drive will use standard 100 megabyte Zip disks, which provide 70 times the capacity and higher performance than traditional floppy disk drives. It will allow for true mobility, enabling users to conveniently take all their files anywhere they carry their laptop computers -- between home and work, on the road to remote locations, or to give multimedia presentations at customer sites -- without any limits on storage capacity. In addition to Chicony, Iomega has OEM relationships with VST Technologies, CNF Technologies and NEC Computer Systems Division to provide notebook Zip drives. In addition to notebook computer makers, Iomega Zip drives are also offered as a standard or optional feature in many computer models from top desktop computer vendors worldwide including Apple, Compaq, Dell, Gateway, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Micron, Motorola, Packard Bell, NEC, Power Computing, Sony, UMAX and Unisys. Since it began shipping in March 1995, more than 6 million Zip drives have been shipped, making it one of the fastest growing consumer electronics products in history. Chicony is one of the world's largest keyboard manufacturers. Its Notebook, Color Notebook and Subnotebook PCs are aimed at particular user groups and have already begun to carve out a niche in the specialty PC market. With record sales in the market, close control of resources, complete development plans and designs and precision-manufacturing of products, Chicony has won a growing list of OEM clients in markets throughout the world. Chicony's international corporate network includes branch offices in both America and Germany, and production facilities in Thailand, mainland China and Scotland, in addition to its corporate headquarters and R&D operations in Taiwan.
