You don't want to mix varying priced stocks in this contest because the total dollar amounts in the total will be dominated by the higher value stocks whatever they do, positive or negative. For example if you mix penny stocks with a large cap stock, when you add up the totals, the large cap stock totally overtakes the pennies in producing the percentage. I would guess that if someone has a higher priced winner, mixed with a bunch of cheap stocks, they might be doing well. It works the other way as well. If all your stocks have about the same value, then each stock will have a more equal weighting in the total when they are added up.
