The Panzers start rolling: Siemens awarded UMTS order from OniWay in Portugal

The Portuguese mobile operator OniWay has chosen the Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group (IC Mobile) as supplier for its UMTS/3G network. In agreement with a Letter of Intent signed in Lisbon, Siemens will set up the radio network for the OniWay third generation (3G) network.

The customer OniWay is majority–owned by Oni, the telecoms segment of the Portuguese electricity group EDP, and Telenor, the leading Norwegian mobile operator and shareholder of a further 16 international mobile operators. The agreement with Siemens covers delivery and turnkey installation of a substancial number base stations (NodeB) and Radio Network Controllers (RNC) by the end of 2001. In a second step OniWay will choose the supplier for the Core Network and the Service Platforms as well as for the remaining NodeBs. The network will provide users of mobile devices, in addition to considerably higher data rates, with multimedia services at any time and anywhere.
