Taiwan's United Micro May Alter Tainan Science Park Plans
TAIPEI (Dow Jones)--United Microelectronics Corp. (Q.UME) said Tuesday it may alter plans for 12-inch wafer plants in the Tainan Science-based Industrial Park.
Since the original decision to build five 12-inch wafer plants in the southern Taiwan science park, the chipmaker has decided to add two 12-inch wafer plants - in Japan and Singapore - and that could change existing plans, a spokesman said.

"It's possible that long-term plans to build five 12-inch wafer plants (in Tainan) could be affected, but it will not affect any ongoing projects," he said.

UMC has already finished construction of one 12-inch wafer plant in the Tainan park, with pilot production expected during the second half of 2001.

If the chip foundry decides to alter its original plan for the Tainan park, it may use some of the land it has purchased there for next generation technology plants, he added.

The comments follow a local media report Tuesday claiming the company is planning to scale back or delay its plants in Tainan.

At 0230 GMT (9:30 p.m. EST), UMC's stock was up 2.8% at NT$56.00 (US$1=NT$32.314) on volume of 23.9 million shares.
