AURORA, Ill. and ALAMEDA, Calif., Feb. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Westell Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: WSTL - news) through its Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) Business Unit, and Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: WIND - news), today announced that Westell is integrating Wind River's VxWorks® real-time operating system (RTOS) and networking protocols for the Access 4000(TM), the first broadband multi-networking platform for small business and home networking. The inclusion of Wind River's technology in the Access 4000 provides a flexible architecture that permits easy upgrades as new technologies become available, thus protecting the customers' investment. Wind River's VxWorks RTOS -- the world's leading RTOS -- and WindNet(TM) protocols integrate advanced networking, management and drivers. Combined with Wind River's Doctor Design(TM) Services for critical feature additions, this solution enables the rapid creation of next-generation broadband access equipment for a range of Westell products. In addition, WindNet protocols are pre-integrated with the VxWorks RTOS and Tornado® integrated development environment.
Westell's upgradeable Access 4000 is the first business and residential solution to maximize high-speed data, shared networking and future voice services in one multi-networking platform, at a more affordable price point than competing integrated access devices (IADs). It is also the first such device on the market today to provide multiple networking options, including home phone networking alliance (HPNA), Wireless local area network (LAN), universal serial bus (USB) and Ethernet, which can all be used simultaneously on a shared digital subscriber line (DSL) connection via plug-in modules and Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) cards.
The Access 4000 enables Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) customers to turn a single telephone jack in a small business or home office into a high-speed Internet connection that supports multiple networking devices, including PCs, laptops, printers, fax machines and telephones.
``We are very pleased about our collaboration with Wind River, a leader in embedded software,'' said Mike Santiago, Vice President and General Manager, Westell CPE Business Unit. ``Technologies continue to change at a dizzying rate, and we are both committed to protecting our customers' investments by providing solutions that meet their needs today and will easily accommodate the technologies of tomorrow.''
``Wind River is deeply committed to providing market leaders like Westell with complete platform solutions,'' said David Fraser, vice president and general manager, Wind River Networks business unit. ``We have supplied Westell with a universal software bundle that can be utilized from one product to the next, without redesigning software for each new device. This tremendous foundation allows Westell to accelerate development and focus on bringing innovative broadband networking products, like the Access 4000, to market quickly. The flexible architecture of the Access 4000 enables the product to adapt as new networking technologies are introduced to market, ensuring an extended life in the market.'' ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I like this announcement with Wind River. It is in the forefront of the embedded internet market and fits with Sun Microsystem's idea of connected devices.
