Russian precious metal recovery from surplus weapons
Excerpt of report in English by Russian news agency Interfax
Moscow, 13 February: Russia last year recovered 100 tonnes of silver, 742 kg of gold and 686 kg of platinum-group metals from weapons and military hardware slated for recycling.

A defence ministry official told a roundtable in the State Duma on the use of precious metals that these weapons and hardware contained 35 tonnes of gold, 300 tonnes of silver and 21 tonnes of platinum- group metals, of which about 10 tonnes of palladium...

Enterprises that have won defence ministry tenders collect and process this secondary raw material containing precious metals. In 2000, they collected 30 per cent more than in 1999.
