I was re-reading parts of "Devil Take the Hindmost" recently and I think this passage from a London periodical regarding a stock market panic in late 19th century America is still very appropriate...SI is littered with the corpses of paper millionaires who are back at their full time help desk jobs now, I think there's an entire porch full of them in fact -g-

"The millionaires of America make corners as if they had nothing to lose. Let some amuse themselves financing as it were only an expensive game. The English, however speculative, fear poverty. The Frenchman shoots himself to avoid it. The American with a million speculates to win ten, and if he loses takes a clerkship with equanimity. This freedom from sordidness is commendable, but it makes a nation of the most degenerate gamesters in the world."
