Characterizing the market certainly makes a difference!
I recall that there was considerable talk about the PC market being unable to grow to the penetration level of, say, the TV market, because of the "complexity" of the PC, and the fact that PCs exceeded the magic $500 price point for the mass consumer product market. [These were reasons that the NC was touted as taking over the world, i.e., before any were actually shipped or had any applications.]
If the sub-$1k sales are expanding the market, precedent to penetration comparable to mass consumer appliances, then where is the negative?
BTW, where did you get the idea that PCs are hitting "the upper limit"? Just today, there were some interesting posts on what 3D graphics / visualization capabilities are coming in [which I'm sure you're aware of anyway]. I can't even imagine how powerful an affordable computer will be in, say, ten years.
