The China question had always been an interesting one. I tend to agree with Dr. J on this one... it's not a matter of if but when. Think about it....why would any country want to be competitively hamstrung by utilizing only one standard and its evolution. Infrastructure costs big bucks....Unicom is now in a position to play the cdma2000 camp against the gsm/wcdma cabal when making future decisions re: infra investments.. Throw in the development of their local industry, superior technology and time to market advantages, sharing of some of the patent pool, and you've got the recipe for success as it relates to rolling out the Q's version of cdma.

Just as we'll see in India and other parts of the world, the gsm camp has underestimated the competitive forces that are shaping the world's landscape and failed to make the necessary kinds of investments and nuturing that is required to insure long-term success. Although the US wireless bodies and service operators have been criticized for the hodgepodge of technologies that makes up its cellular industry, in the long run they will be way ahead of others, like continental Europe, that employ a less competitive approach.

No question in my mind that China is the key for the Q to becoming the dominant force in wireless over the next decade. The only real risk that I see to their flavor of CDMA being deployed on a large scale in China is an overt act of aggression that escalates into some long-term conflict between China and the US.
