Libya: Canadian Firms on Oil, Gas Trade Mission to North Africa

OTTAWA (Feb. 7) XINHUA - Canada is embarking on an oil and gas trade mission to North Africa until February 15, International Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew announced Wednesday.

Pettigrew said 19 Canadian firms have joined the mission to Algeria, Libya and Tunisia, where the firms will participate in a major regional trade fair, the Oil and Gas North Africa show.

That will be the first major Canadian trade mission to include Libya, which expects 10 billion U.S. dollars in direct foreign investment in its oil and gas industry over the next decade.

Sanctions against Libya imposed by the United Nations in 1992 were suspended in April 1999, the announcement noted.

"On my trade mission to the Maghreb in the fall of 2000, it was clear that Canadian technology and training was in demand in the region," Pettigrew said.

The Canadian firms will display its expertise and innovation including exploration, engineering consulting services, testing and monitoring equipment, as well as chemicals used in production, according to the minister.
