Neocon,

"
I regard this whole Napster flap as being like the crisis occasioned by cassette recording. In the end, it was pointless to try to control it, and in the end it wasn't so harmful, because people still preferred to buy albums, and used the recording technology for individual songs or compilations."

I clearly see your point with the comparison to cassette. Even with that example an individual must directly know someone who did purchase the music. Due to the progressive quality reduction this was also limited to copying original factory recordings. It was revenue leakage, but on a much more limited scale. With Napster we don't even know the Joe who is loaning us the product. Its digital so I can pass a 500th generation copy to someone who will not be able to discern any difference from the original. Hypothetically, one copy of each artists work could actually be purchased and millions of copies made equal to the original.

In the end you are probably right. People still want the artwork and liner notes and to "have" that one in their collection. The last time I read posted sales numbers it would appear that Napster certainly has not hurt music sales.

I would be happy to pay Napster a fee to download. I like the ease and the fact that I get a specific recording. What can I say, I have a soft spot for the "one-hit-wonder". I just don't want to pay for the other 9 tracks which, more often than not, are not of interest to me.

The other great thing about Napster is the selection. Rare and alternative performances are often available. This will be missed if Napster exists in no form.
