| Yep. There are all sorts of twists and turns in people's careers. Oprah was on a talk show on one of the Baltimore stations (in Annapolis, one gets both Washington and Baltimore), and gave no hint that she would become Queen of Chat. She was clearly second fiddle to her partner, Richard Sher, who stayed local. Jim Henson started the Muppets when he was at the University of Maryland, and they were initially local, and did commercial spots, so I grew up watching them before anyone else in the country had heard of Kermit. Robert Prosky, who has had success as a character actor, first hit some amount of success at Arena Stage, in Washington. In fact, I saw him in Death of a Salesman. Then, in late middle age, he got a role in Hill Street Blues, and started to take off. Tom Clancy was an insurance salesman not so far from Annapolis........ |
