Al- somewhere I read how the analog Ampex tapes sound warm - do you know if Buddy Holly was recorded on an Ampex 2" tape unit in the fifties? I have a Buddy Holly CD and I am amazed at the quality of the sound back then.

As far as equipment is concerned, there definitely is a difference between discrete transistors and integrated circuits in amplifiers. I have a Pioneer amplifier from the 70's that weighs about 45 lbs, has two separate power supplies, one for each channel. It sounds great compared to the new IC amplified receivers..
