You are assuming the answer.

That's the key question.

Are there things that are right or wrong no matter what a society thinks?

Or are things ONLY right or wrong as a society defines them as such?

To use my earlier examples: does a society's belief that the holocaust was moral make it moral?

Does a society's belief that forced adolescent female genital mutilation is moral make it moral?

Can we say "well, Auschwitz was moral for 1930s Germany but would not have been in 1950s Germany" and accept that as an okay answer?

Or do we say "I don't care what the 1930s Germans thought, Auschwitz was immoral, period."

That's the dilemma. I would love to hear your comments on these specific questions.
