"The poet with the gravelly voice whose songs became anthems of the civil rights movement and the Vietnam war protests now confesses that he no longer much cares."

right. because he can't afford to. if there was a way to add it all up, he has probably cared more in his life up to this point than many of us will ever come close to. he has been the point man of caring for decades.

but i'll go you one better. he still cares. cause he's singing about caring. he's telling us how to cope. he's exaggerating in order to illustrate how to see your way through. he's still laying out the gems for our picking...

"only a fool in here would think he's got anything to prove"

what an exceptional thought to share

"don't get up gentlemen, i'm only passing through"

how timeless (like time out of mind)

"i hurt easy, i just don't show it
you can hurt someone and not even know it"

how true (and caring too)

"i used to care, but things have changed"

but don't speak too soon for the wheel's still in spin

"the human mind can only stand so much"

the man standing next to me, his head was exploding
i was praying the pieces wouldn't fall on me

"i'm looking up into the sapphire tinted skies"

the angels play on their horns all day,
the whole earth in progression seems to pass by
but does anyone hear the music they play,
does anyone even try?

"this place ain't doing me any good"

i feel like a prisoner in a world of mystery

"all the truth in the world adds up to one big lie"

money doesn't talk it swears

he used to care but, what has changed
