Eric or anyone,

Put on your geek hat but talk to me in English.

Now that my cable operator has replaced more outside equipment, I decided to collect some anecdotal evidence comparing Internet access using my two computer systems. The computer with a cable modem has a Pentium III 733 Mghz processor and 128 MB RAM. The laptop with a 56.6K dial-up modem has a Pentium III 500 Mghz processor and 128MB RAM.

My wife operated one computer while I operated the other. Neither computer had any programs running other than their ISP software. We pressed the "Enter" button at exactly the same time to access six websites I frequent daily. The table below shows the amount of time required to fully load each site during two comparative tests:

Cable Cable Dial-up Dial-up
Website.com 1st Test 2nd Test 1st Test 2nd Test
(seconds) (seconds) (seconds) (seconds)

Notice that the dial-up modem is accessing the first two sites (SI and the Fool) far quicker than the cable modem. Sadly, those are the two sites I use the most by a wide margin. Yet the cable modem accesses the other sites I frequent much faster than the dial-up modem, as should be expected.

Any explanation? Is it the way the data happens to be routed from SI and Fool to the two different modems? Is this anecdotal evidence too limited to draw any conclusions?
