Key Components in
the Killer Platform

Flexent™ Wireless Router: a Bell
Labs innovation that provides
signaling and gateway functions for
wireless traffic from mobile devices.
Associated with applications resident
in the Flexent Mobility Server the
router handles tasks such as
directing voice or data packets to
either the PSTN or to the Internet.
Unlike conventional routers however,
this one performs such uniquely
mobile control functions as the frame
selection and "soft handoff" required
in 3G networks. In addition, it is
compatible with high-speed packet
systems such as Lucent’s
PacketStar™ PSAX Access
Concentrator, permitting signals
leaving it to travel over ATM links,
which cost less than dedicated lines
for backhauling in the core network.

Flexent Mobility Server: built on next-generation,
carrier-grade Sun server technology augmented with Bell Labs
software to deliver 99.999% availability.

Flexent OneBTS: one hardware platform that can be
provisioned with software to support any of the major
IMT-2000 wireless air interfaces – 2G and 3G. This single base
station affords network operators whose networks encompass
multiple global standards great flexibility in provisioning
services.

Radio Network Controller: manages the base stations and
provides a multimedia capability.

Mobile Internet Gateway: mediates access to data
maintained in wireless infrastructure elements by
Internet-based systems. For example, to Internet applications
and services it adds information about a user’s "presence" and
location, so services can be tailored to the time and place –
made context-sensitive. Open applications programming
interfaces permit any outside developer (with appropriate
authentication and safeguards) to mate its applications to the
Mobile Internet Gateway.

Internet Message Management System: part of Lucent’s
MSC, the Internet Message Management software gives
subscribers control over their messaging. They can define what
message to receive when, through subscriber-controlled
filtering rules, and also to receive e-mails with attachments
such as voice files, Microsoft PowerPoint* presentations, or
Lotus WordPro* documents. Such attachments can be
converted into speech and listened to through the mobile unit,
or redirected to a nearby fax in written form. This software,
along with the Voice Browser, is part of Lucent’s new
programmable MSC.
