Intelogis Announces Open-Source Licensing
Source-code licensing to speed widespread adoption of Powerline NetworkingTM technology
DRAPER, Utah (March 10, 1999) -- Intelogis Inc., the leading developer of Powerline NetworkingTM technology, today announced an open-source licensing program for its PassPort Plug-In NetworkTM drivers and administrator software. Users can download the PassPort device driver and administrator software source code for free from Intelogis' Web site at intelogis.com. The open-source licensing program marks Intelogis' initial step in facilitating widespread adoption of its Powerline Networking technology into other devices and technologies, including non- Windows operating systems such as Linux, Unix and Macintosh. In addition to the open-source licensing program, Intelogis will also be offering additional third-party development kits within the year. According to Alan Walbeck, Intelogis' vice president of engineering, the open-source licensing program allows the company to move its Powerline Networking technology to other computer platforms more quickly. "We have been contacted by many developers who are eager to port our software to other platforms, such as Linux, Unix and Macintosh," Walbeck said. "This licensing program is an integral part of our ongoing plans for universal adoption of our technology. It will be a great benefit to the non-Windows community because we will be able to bring the simplicity of Powerline Networking to consumers who use something other than Windows." Walbeck also said Intelogis' technology distributes IP and IPX throughout the home or small office regardless of the computer's operating system. Open-source software, such as Intelogis' PassPort drivers and administrator software, is freely licensed for widespread, unrestricted usage and distribution, including source code. According to Walbeck, the open-source concept has been in use well over a decade, but really caught fire with the advent of the Internet. "Open-source programs can reach a much larger base of users more quickly than their more traditional proprietary counterparts, because open-source programs are usually unhindered by legal restrictions," Walbeck said. "The open-source community has been quietly producing some of the most widely used software in the industry, such as Apache, one of the most popular Web servers on the Internet, and Linux, a popular full-featured open-source operating system." Intelogis is the first company to bring a Powerline Networking solution to market with its PassPort Plug-In Network, a "no new wires" networking solution that allows users to transmit data over existing electrical wiring and outlets. Intelogis recently announced a technology breakthrough affecting future products that will enable data transmission speeds in excess of 10 megabits per second (Mbps) over AC electrical wiring. The PassPort Plug-In Network currently operates with Windows 95/98 and NT. PassPort Plug-In Network installation is as simple as plugging PassPort Plug-In adapters into electrical outlets, attaching computers or printers to the adapters via parallel cables, and installing software onto a PC. No additional wiring, internal network interface cards or hubs are required. The PassPort Plug-In Network is available at CompUSA (NYSE: CPU), Fry's Electronics, OfficeMax (NYSE: OMX) and Staples (Nasdaq: SPLS) and can be purchased from Intelogis' Web site at intelogis.com. Intelogis is also distributing to resellers and VARs through Tech Data (Nasdaq: TECD) and Ingram Micro (NYSE: IM). Incorporated in January 1997, privately held Intelogis (pronounced in-TEL-oh-jis) is the leading developer of powerline carrier technology. The company's technology transmits high-speed digital signals over AC electrical wiring for home and small business networking and other applications such as broadband Internet distribution, home control, and communications over the external power grid.
