I think it is obvious that if the senators had felt that it didn't make sense; there wouldn't be any. Never underestimate the ability of politicians to weasel out of something if they didn't want to do it. Both the Rep. and Dems. will have something to gain, if they don't overplay their hand; and that is why we are having hearings. Both republican and Dems. will look good if they come out in favor of clean government. With support for McCain-Feingold gathering steam, the only way to slow it down; and save their perks; is to declare you are adamantly against corruption, thus nullifying the need for McCain Feingold. All of the dems. spoke against the pardons in their introductory speeches; especially Schumer, a major Clinton apologist. My bet is that the fix is in. Bill will be sacrificed for the good of the party. The public will be happy that the corruption was contained to slick Willy; and both rep. and dems. will declare themselves newfound supporters of principles and morals, thereby stifling the need for McCain Feingold. Gw is staying out of it looking presidential, so he is looking good. The dems will cut themselves loose from Bill, thereby giving themselves a news start. I say both sides want these hearings.
