so BRCD switches are proprietary, only working with other BRCD switches. BRCD was very aggressive in their marketing. They formed alliances with storage product makers early. They formed an alliance with CSCO for a CSCO based IP to FC interface board/software.
Result=90% market share.

Thanks DS,

Sounds gorillaish to me. Although I keep hearing that BRCD is a King, not a gorilla. Is it because of low switching costs? Would seem to me if you have a room full of BRCD switched storage that replacing said BRCD products would involve either

(1) Pain of reintegrating new switches; no fun
(2) Expenses of buying entire new products; no fun
(3) or buying new products that are compatible with BRCD's switches (ie, one element of a gorilla, architectural control)
(4) or something discontinuous will come along.

Seems to me with these characteristics that BRCD will either come out a gorilla or discontinued.
