mary, re: People can and virtually say anything they want and get away with it. Sell-side analysts are supposed to adhere to certain regulatory standards, including some below. The problem is there can be a dispute as to what truthfulness, material, false, misleading, reasonable, etc., mean. The fact that a report gets published implies that it has been given the okay for release and thus meets standards of truthfulness and good taste and that it does not contain any untrue statements, omit any material fact, or is false or misleading. Recommendations must have a reasonable basis and supporting information must be provided or be offered.
