to me the states are the harbinger of what's to come - many have been forced to slash their budgets due to sudden revenue shortfalls, which turned projected surpluses into deficits. just as a few states swung into surplus before the federal government did, they once again perform as an important leading indicator. the surplus, and all those lofty surplus projections, will disappear in a heartbeat imo.

no doubt a stagnant/falling stock market will contribute greatly to this swing back into deficit. i hereby predict that the magnitude of the swing will surprise the politicos vastly.
