I remember VAX...they were big at the University I attended...actually, weren't they big at most schools?
Wasn't it DEC's Ken Olsen who said "... There is no reason for any individual to have a computer in their home"?
Anyway...
As I just PM'ed to someone, my concern with NetApp going in the front door of the conventional Glass House is that there are other products which, while not nearly as good as NetApp's can, put on a show of a good enough approximation to NetApp's feature list that the muckety-mucks will not want to risk going with NetApp. I'm currently working on acquiring additional storage for a Sun server that my group will be using. I've been getting more familiar with Sun's storage offerings, and they seem compelling...and "safe". Unfortunately, for the time being, NetApp doesn't have a chance in the datacenters at the company I work for.
Note that I said "conventional Glass House" above. I feel that NetApp will become a force with network edge-deployed applications which require the top-notch data management tools (and hardware performance) that NetApp can provide.
Their way into the Glass Houses will be easier from then on.
All IMHO, of course. If I really knew what I was doing, I'd be almost as rich as DS! ;-))
