Scrapps, check out this BS i got from Erol's web site.

News & Update

X2 MODEMS :

We will be supporting the K56Flex modems. We are currently testing this new tech- nology
and expect to make it available in all of the Erol's local access points (POPs) by the end of
the year. We are also field testing the X2 Robotics version of 56k and plan to make it
available in designated POP sites yet to be determined. We will charge a premium for the
X2 56K service while the 56K standard will be the same cost as Erol's regular access. If
you have not yet upgraded your modem, Erol's recommends you upgrade to the K56Flex
as this is the established industry standard. You may contact us for a discounted price on
these modems at 703-321-8000 and press 1 for Internet Sales.

At this time, the X2 from USR requires the same hardware at the user's end as well as the
ISP's end which is why the industry standard is being set to the K56Flex. Because our
customers use a broad assortment of modems, we cannot limit our capabilities to just one
brand. We do support 28.8 and 33.6 modems from U.S. Robotics, as they do not have the
same limitations. The 28.8 and 33.6 modems from USR will be capable of upgrades to the
single standard of 56K technology when that is finalized.

There are uncomfirmed reports that the phone companies are refusing to support the 56k
technology. One of the long distance companies were reported as saying, "We have our
doubts about the ability of local telephone networks to support 56k streams of data. We
don't want to mislead our customers by promising something when we're not even sure if
the local providers can support it." Also, PC WORLD online reports a spokesman from
AT&T Worldnet said, "..the company is currently notplanning to support 56k modem
connections."

We rec'd the second paragraph a few weeks ago. We are waiting for confirmation, but, we
currently do not have an estimated timeframe for an answer to this.

If you have not been to the Erol's Home page and clicked on the "56K coming soon", you
may want to do so. You may also want to read the article we have posted in our News &
Updates" column which is located on the Erol's Home page for April 2, 1997. It includes
research information regarding this issue.
