Yes I read the same article as you and I read another one I can't find at the moment to post the URL to that had IBM's Adjenda on it.
The short of it is IBM is into NCs. IBM manufactures lots of NCs now.
IBM wants to replace 30 Million Dumb terminals with NCs ASAP to win back the Mainframe business from Client Servers. MainFrames are still IBM's bread and butter in sales and service. IBM lost money making PCs so they let ACER make the PCs for them now. IBM will provide the HDs and IBM 6x86s where the margins are higher.

Although there have been some articles regarding compatilbilty problems between different Java Platforms. Reading between the lines
Cowpland wants at least 1 Java platform to at least run Corel Java
and the easiest way to do that is to make your own Java NC.

If in fact IBM had NCs running Java, why has Corel not setup a demo
to provide proof of concept that Java is a Viable alternative to
Network PCs?
