I'm not so sure of that. Easy enough to say that "death" is merely an agreed-upon definition. But the state described by that definition exists regardless of any definition we choose to place on it. If we choose to define a dead person as alive, that won't stop decomposition. Maybe the word "death" is only a consensus definition. But the state of being dead, and the cause of death, are facts that exist quite independently of our definitions, opinions, and perceptions.
