Paul, Intel investors, I saw everyone's favorite, Dan Niles on CNBC this morning, interviewed by Mark Hanes and a bit by Jim Cramer. It was mostly about the PC market, ostensibly because of Dell and HP reporting tonight. He's pretty down on the PC market, but thinks some stocks can't go much lower (Compaq and Gateway). On Dell, he feels different because they're not near a 5 year low like the others and he thinks they'll have to lower forecasts. Hanes tried to get out of Niles some reason for the PC market to pick up. They agreed on Whistler (should say Windows XP), and P4 with DDR and 0.13. Said there is a need for a cheaper but robust OS to compete with Unix, which is still expensive (but for PC's?). On P4, Niles said 0.13 in Q3 or Q4 will get P4 twice the speed at half the power (cost to make also, my words). He mentioned DDR as answer to Hanes reaching for a Rambus reason for a PC boost. Niles said Rambus is no big deal, then went on about 0.13 and DDR.
Niles also mentioned AOL/Time Warner twice as a catalyst: downloading movies through an AOL/TW gateway, taking advantage of P4's rich media capabilities, etc. Look for Niles to get back on the Intel bandwagon if 0.13, DDR progress well. No AMD mention.
