Dell slashes 1,700 jobs due to PC slowdown

AUSTIN, Tex. -- In its first-ever layoff, Dell Computer Corp. here today announced that it is cutting about 1,700 jobs, or 4% of its workforce, due to a slowdown in the PC industry.

The staff reductions--which had been expected for weeks--will affect administrative, marketing, and product support functions in its Central Texas operations, the company said.

Many of the reductions involve positions made redundant by the recent reorganization of several Dell business units, the company added. Others are the result of Dell's lower expectations for industry and company growth. Reductions are being made at all organizational levels.

At the end of its fiscal fourth-quarter 2001, Dell employed 22,000 people in Central Texas and 40,200 worldwide.
