"The fundamental problem at most companies is that the engineers like to do cool stuff"

Tell me about it. We have 4 people fleeing the wreckage of a company that was 3dfx'd and we have stirred up a major furor when we started pushing the concept of reducing the number of OS's used from 4 down to 1 and the number of processor architectures used from 6 down to 1. The Engineering VP said it was the first time he ever heard an engineer say that before...

"P4 appears to be the product of some out of control engineers looking to entertain themselves at the expense of the company."

I think it may have started that way, and that is likely why it got killed the first time. Then when the rumors of the K7 started to swirl, it got dusted off and hacked at until it met production parameters. Personally I think it might have been better to have just bit the bullet and produced the original and prayed that 0.13 micron would work out soon, but then I don't sit in a wood paneled office.
