Joe,

The development of appropriate chipsets has to be coordinated, but think how much less risk there is to having multiple chipset vendors developing memory controllers, than putting all your eggs in one basket with an integrated controller.

Integrated chips also have larger die sizes, and lower yields.

Integration is a great idea for the embedded market, which can not stand the additional costs of a second chip. For the PC market, onboard memory controllers are a really bad idea.
