You box a short by getting an equal long. So you don't have to be subject to the uptick rules and standing in the line to sell, if you decide to go short again. Just sell the boxing long position. Can be very important, especially if it is a short restricted stock, but ties up more capital the way most brokerages calculate it. A lot more.
