Essentially it documents the CIEN earnings and the company's position in the optic equipment area. Specific to CSCO is the following passage:

Nettles says carriers worldwide, under pressure to make money from broadband services quickly, are accelerating their buildout of next-generation optical switches that replace Sonet add/drop multiplexers and crossconnects.

I believe that Cerent, which CSCO paid the equivalent of 7B for last year, makes add/drop SONET multiplexers. CSCO was planning on this area booming over the next few years and now it may be that they overestimated the competing technology and will have to ditch Cerent right along with Monterey.
