Yes and no. Check out this PIII optimization (using VTune 5.0!) of the popular ray-tracing program PoVRay: aceshardware.com

Notice that ALL the processors benefit greatly from the recompile. Since no "special" instructions are used, there's no need to include multiple binaries. Sure, the P4-specific optimization improves upon the PIII optimization, but only slightly.

It's also interesting to note that the Athlon actually benefits more from the PIII optimizations than the PIII itself does (28% vs 23%). This might be due to the test methodology (or lack of same), since the scores are supposedly submitted by readers. (I got roughly a 20% improvement on my Athlon system, rendering a completely different scene).
