I see the same parallels with the IBM case that you do. The advancing technology vision, the unifying force and evangelism are absent, even the marketing machinery has been quiet. One can also question why a company like Intel should want to advance when the DOJ came within a hair’s breadth of prosecuting them as well. Last Christmas season we had little if anything new in PC offerings. PC ads, which used to be front page, were buried somewhere in the back of the Circuit City flyer. It wasn’t long until conventional wisdom deemed the PC era was over. Maybe it's over, maybe it's hibernating , I don't know. We are told net-centric computing via peripheral devices is the new future of technology. Wish I could offer some idea of who or what company might benefit and be able to fill the vacuum in order to become the new leader, but I don’t see any. Suppose we’ll have to wait and see if the DOJ cloud drags on and on, and keep our eyes open. Maybe we’ll be pleasantly surprised to see the case expeditiously and intelligently resolved.
(BTW, I might post your letter, unless you’d rather I didn’t).
