Agreed, they’ll have to pry my PC out of my dead, cold hands. If PC’s are like owning a car, which I believe is true, then net-centric computing would be like taking the bus, only a lot less private than the bus. It would seem reasonable for MSFT to offer an olive branch, such as the handheld market, which could elevate Palm to a leadership position. Given the rapid rate of miniaturization, such an agreement would probably have to be an ongoing work in progress. It would be nice if the government and MSFT could adopt a working relationship, in which the government could recognize, and benefit from, the high level of expertise and vision possessed by MSFT. It would be great if MSFT could recognize that this may provide a way to maintain their leadership position and bring their vision into reality, without constantly having to play hardball. Any agreements will, most likely, rapidly be rendered obsolete anyway, since that’s the nature of the industry. It will be much to the people’s detriment if the government insists upon continuing to play the role of grand inquisitor, as if it knows best what to do with the technology industry. |
