According to the Declaration of Independence, it's when it "becomes necessary."

So if the crack dealers think that it's necessary to rebel to protect their business from onerous drug laws, that's ok?

My point is that there is no way to decide when it is necessary. The government obviously can't do it, and since they can't, who can? If the armed populace gets to decide, who says that one groups decision is more valid than any other group's decision?

My own belief is that violent opposition to government is acceptable only when no peaceful form of redress exists, meaning in a dictatorship or a foreign occupation. If we want to arm the populace against the unlikely event that such circumstances should arise, perhaps we should consider something akin to the Swiss solution. You are right in pointing out that the Swiss are heavily armed, but that is hardly the same sort of armament we have in the US. The Swiss are issued assault rifles and sealed blocks of ammunition. If they can't account for every round, they are in deep doodoo. That is not at all the kind of situation that the NRA and allies want to see.
