Has anybody ever gone Whitewater rafting?

Been a little while ago now, but down the Grand Canyon. One of the best 10 days of my life - seemed like 10 years. You got up at dawn, and until you collapsed into your sleeping bag both your anatomy and psyche were assaulted by a myriad of overwhelming experiences. Since I went with a college geology class, I suffered from information overload. I received detailed explanations of each stratum.

Told that "best ride" was available in the front of the boat, naturally I wanted to "get my money's worth". These "boats" were really WWII pontoons tied together. I perched myself "far forward" where two one inch ropes crossed each other. Wiggling the fingers of one hand under the rope intersection and then interlacing with the fingers of the other hand, I held on. Over some long stretches of rapids only four square inches of skin would be in contact with the "boat", while the rest of my anatomy was suspended above the "boat" and being wildly jerked hither and yon.

At river level, the temperature was intense, while the humidity was ... well it wasn't. It was so dry, you could watch a wet patch of skin dry in seconds. First you bake in the sun, then you are inundated and finally you are "freezing" because of the chilling evaporation. After a while your temperature regulating system just "gives up". A common sight was to see someone perspiring profusely with teeth chattering and blue lips.

Sounds atrocious; I go again in a second.
