It would be really unfortunate for Intel if it turns out to be true...

Intel having to jack up the supply voltage to get to 1.7 Ghz is very significant for AMD and represents the dropping of the other shoe. First we found out that the P4 doesn't perform. Now we see that it does not scale. If Intel runs into any trouble bringing up 0.13u, it could be a disaster for them.

However, AMD must continue to execute to take advantage of this situation. As of yet, we do not know if AMD will have to jack up the supply voltage on the Athlon to get it to 1.3 and 1.4 Ghz. Rest assured that Paul is salivating on the sidelines waiting for just such an occurrence.

Going forward, I see AMD's biggest competitive advantage being relatively small die size of the Athlon core. This core provides the performance of the P4 at half the die size. So, while the P4 only becomes a viable business proposition at 0.13u, a world of CMP opportunities open up for AMD. They can do dual processor on a die Sledgehammer, and even quad Thoroughbred on a die, if they wanted to. Due to this strategic and technological disadvantage that Intel finds itself in, you can bet your bottom dollar that Intel will soon be supporting SMT research in a big way, and blasting us with the benefits of SMT with their reality obfuscation machine.

Pravin.
