Margin debt tends to be very "trendy"

In a long bull market it gets to very high levels. When it starts to decline it is long term bearish as long as it keeps falling. In a big bear like 1973-74 it can fall 50% from it's highs. In a bear like the 1930's I think it dropped over 90% before the bear was over.
