Hi Karen,

One of the things that I haven't seen brought into this discussion is that we, as a society, have a sliding scale of "personhood" that is based on the level of dependence that a person has on another. The more dependence, the fewer the rights that are granted. We don't grant 17 year olds the same rights that we offer 30 year olds, and a 16 year old has more rights than a 5 year old. As a parent of an 18 month old boy, nobody would question my right to force my son to stay in his room. But if I forced my son at age 21 to stay in a room, I have actually violated his rights in a legal sense. I would argue too, that my 18 month old son has more rights than a 4 week old fetus.
