Happens a lot. The government seasonally adjusts these things.

It last happened in Dec 98 and Jan 99.

Note, BTW, that the adjustment factor is highly fallible when it comes to the PPI and wintertime. And while the magnitude of today's spike was alarming, there are often spikes in Jan PPI, just of smaller magnitude. There is no question in my mind that the January adjustment factors in January need some adjusting.
