AN interesting observation from the new book "The Abolition of Britain" by Peter Hitchens.. American commentator Neil Postman noted that the nightmare of George Orwell's totalitarian society had not come true but what was actually coming true was Alduous Huxley's alternative nightmare in Brave New World where nobody even realized that they were being oppressed..What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban books for there would be no one who wanted to read them.Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared that the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance. Orwell feared we would become a captive culture. Huxley feared that we would become a trivial culture.
Huxley in fact warned directly of 'man's almost infinite capacity for distractions.' Postman believes that capacity has been fully engaged in the last 20 years.

The liberals are fond of saying that religion is the opiate of the masses . I heard a talk show host reply that "SPORTS ARE THE OPIATE OF THE ASSES"
