For a contrary view you might consider this book review:

Spiking the Gun Myth , by Gary Wills, a review of Arming America : The Origins of a National Gun Culture. By Michael A. Bellesiles.

For an inaccurate point a view I might consider that book. His source material contains information to refute his
own arguments. Also to an extent I consider it irrelevant. Even If guns where not common in the past in the US (and they were), it would not change our constitutional right to own them.
