Elmer,

Athlon has a superscalar FPU, and it can be optimized with more flexibility than the P4 FPU which operates either in x86 brain-dead mode, or in wide SSE mode.

BTW: Here is a review which indicates what benchmarks buyers actually care about:

crn.com

The CRN Test Center has discovered that AMD's latest processor outperforms Intel's for most business applications at a significantly lower price, even though the AMD systems tested had lower clock speeds and slower memory.

Two AMD 1.2GHz Athlon systems, one with PC133 memory, the other with Double Date Rate (DDR) RAM,outperformed an Intel 1.5GHz Pentium 4 system by 13.20 percent and 19.29 percent, respectively.
