| Yes, it was like peeking into a different, or at least receding, world. Then there were the movies: the independent VHF channel, 5, which was bought by Metromedia and then Fox, used to have three films on Sunday, from late morning to late afternoon, often good one's, usually about 20 years old, give or take. They would sometimes have special evening festivals as well: Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, Joan Crawford, for example. Other stations would have old movies to fill time on Saturdays and other odd times, and if one were lucky, one could get an education in American movies just through the television. I saw all kinds of things this way, for example, I don't know how many times I saw the Maltese Falcon, or Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, or Duck Soup........ |
