...The U.S. minister went into the G7 meeting a day after telling Germany's Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) ``we are not pursuing, as it is often said, a policy of a strong dollar.''

His statement pushed down the dollar and raised questions whether Bush's administration, in office for less than a month, was fully committed to a strong currency.

The dollar's value was crucial to drawing foreign investment into U.S. assets in the 1990s, and any extended selloff could have an affect on markets and asset prices around the world.

The dollar on Friday recouped some of its losses after a U.S. Treasury official traveling with O'Neill to the G7 talks in Italy denied any reversal in Washington's stance.

Some officials said they believed the strong dollar policy was intact but that there were doubts -- as on the American foreign policy front -- about the extent to which Bush's team was pursuing a more hands-off strategy on the world stage...


These kinds of mixed messages are not good...not good at all.
