So we have this standoff. The playing field changes from time to time at the margins, but basically everyone is dug in and I guess we stay at standoff until technology bails us out sometime in the future. I suppose it's possible that the balance could shift enough to make abortion illegal, but I doubt it. It's sure not going to shift more toward greater access.

I agree.

The real problem is that such stand off is not enough to reverse the effects of population growth. Perhaps in the USA such is not an urgent problem (for now), and it also depends on what socio-economic level you analyze.

But in the rest of the world, population explosion is far more serious.

Take a look at some interesting facts:

a few of them:

7.6 billion by 2020 graphs and use of resources by industrialized nations and third world.

pbs.org

"...all of my colleagues and all of our students are scared witless about the state of the planet because it's so clear that we already have exceeded carrying capacity."

Given the uneven distribution of population and resources, it's hard to comprehend the problem. Few of us fully understand just how small is the fraction of Earth capable of supporting human life. This exercise makes it clear.

A glossary of terms that are important to understand:

example:

Carrying Capacity

The greatest number of living species (including humans) that can be supported in an area given its environmental conditions. For example, to raise one cow requires one acre of rich pastureland or ten acres of scrubland. See also BIOPHYSICAL CARRYING CAPACITY and SOCIAL CARRYING CAPACITY.

World Carrying Capacity

a table showing:

People of ages 5 - 14 years are those who will enter their high reproductive period in the coming years. Note the groups in blue. It is disproportionately large groups such as these who fuel high demographic momentum.
